Abstract. This paper introduces the Educateca project, a Web 2.0 approach to e-learning. The project refactors SCORM, the de facto e-learning standard, to embrace the two main shifts in Web 2.0: the WOA (Web Oriented Architecture) and the social trends in user involvement. In this new context of the Internet, flexibility is a must and so big and static e-learning content are no longer effective enough. Thus, we propose a more dynamic approach where small pedagogical units are offered as services to be combine on-the-fly, whenever needed. Social aspects are currently another key and so we propose to adapt the e-learning ecosystem to allow students to innovate and create new content and/or assess the existent one. Clearly, in this new philosophy, recommendation is essential to avoid overwhelming users with too much educative content that are not able to filter, asses and/or consume.

This chapter presents a selected review for Cloud Computing and explains the issues and risks of adopting Cloud Computing in a business environment. Although all the risks identified may be associated with two major Cloud adoption challenges, a framework is required to support organisations as they begin to use Cloud and minimise risks of Cloud adoption. Eleven Cloud Computing frameworks are investigated and a comparison of their strengths and limitations is made. The result of the comparison is that none of them can deal with all the Cloud adoption challenges thoroughly and a new, comprehensive framework is required if organisations are to overcome these challenges. This proposed framework would ensure that benefits of Cloud adoption are maximised whilst minimising the risks of Cloud adoption and can integrate existing and new projects with Leeds Beckett Cloud.

A New E-learning Model Based on Elastic Cloud Computing for Distance Education

The development of information technology has a positive influence over distance education. For instance, it gives birth to E-learning, a novel and convenient mode of online learning. However, the existing E-learning platforms are often in need of heavy infrastructural investment. To solve the problem, this paper introduces the architecture of elastic cloud computing to E-learning, and proposes a new load balancing algorithm based on elastic cloud computing. Then, it establishes a five-layer elastic cloud-based E-learning model for distance education. The subsequent evaluation demonstrates that the model can effectively respond to the dynamic load imposed on by numerous users, and maximize the revenue of the E-learning platform.
