Blue chromogenic dental staining in child with West syndrome

Abstract: The patient had no oral intake of food or drink, which placed him in a low caries risk category despite limited oral hygiene practice. His extensive lists of medications were not found to have extrinsic dental staining as a possible side effect. However, these may have altered the oral flora such that growth of pigmented bacteria, normally absent from the oral cavity, was favoured, causing generalised extrinsic staining.

“…The low caries rate in children with CP can be partly attributed to effective oral hygiene strategies for children with disabilities, including those with neurological impairments [33,34], although prevention of dental caries in patients with neurological impairments is still a major problem in some developing countries [35]. Patients with feeding tubes have been described as being at low risk for dental caries even with limited oral hygiene practice because they do not take food orally [36]. In the present study, all children were fed via a tube, and the DMF Index was quite low.…”

“…Regarding tooth discoloration, no previous study has focused on this in people with Down syndrome, but this study found three subjects experiencing it. This involved discoloration of the teeth either extrinsically (superficially, either on the surface of the tooth or on the acquired pellicle) or intrinsically (possibly arising during the development of different tooth appearance and degree of severity) [32]. Tooth discoloration can occur along a spectrum of nine different colors: black, brown, blue, green, gray, orange, pink, red, and yellow.…”
