“…Although FCR management in the PNW has focused on cultural practices including time of planting, fertilizer rates, and residue management, host plant resistance has been postulated as the most feasible approach to reducing wheat yield loss due to soil-borne diseases like crown rot (Cook and Veseth 1991; Cook 2001; Paulitz et al 2002; Smiley and Yan 2009). Due to a lack of documented resistance in PNW cultivars, our approach has been to introgress FCR resistance from Australian cultivars, including Gluyas Early, Gala, Kukri, 2-49 and Sunco, into adapted PNW germplasm (Burgess et al 2001; Kammholz et al 2001; Wildermuth et al 2001; Wallwork et al 2004; Bovill et al 2010). The cultivar Sunco, released from the University of Sydney Plant Breeding Institute in 1986, has partial adult plant resistance to FCR (Woolston 2000; Wildermuth et al 2001; Wallwork et al 2004) and has been utilized in crosses with PNW breeding lines to improve resistance.…”
