Bitumen Emissions on Workplaces in Germany

Abstract: Since the mid-1990s the German BITUMEN Forum has worked on a comprehensive program on the safety and health at work with bitumen. Determining the concentration of emissions arising from handling hot bituminous substances has been one of the main priorities of the forum's work.Almost all branches of industry in Germany that use bitumen have been examined. More than 2000 samples were gathered between 1991 and 2006. The measuring method determined vapors and aerosols emitted from hot bitumen. With the results of t… Show more

“…Some evidence for asphalt-related emissions during hot application exists from Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)focused occupational exposure studies; however, no studies have quantified emission rates or complete source profiles (9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15). Area source asphalt-related emissions are essentially absent in emission inventories, with the exception of VOC solvent evaporation from cutback asphalt application, a rare (~1%) method compared to hot-mix asphalt that uses no solvents (1).…”

“…In a German study, (15) exposure levels were approximately 2.5 and 1.5 mg/m 3 , respectively, for two studied populations of paver drivers/screedmen and roller drivers. The present results follow the same trends (1.8 and 0.5 mg/m 3 ).…”

“…Bitumen sheets are flexible layers, typically 4-8 mm thick, composed of bitumen mixed with different polymers and reinforcing materials, and their use for roof sealing, in modern buildings is very popular. For example, in Germany, the manufacturing of bitumen products for roofing membranes and waterproofing sheets represents the second-largest application for bitumen, following road construction [38]. Many bitumen products may emit polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons that have mutagenic and carcinogenic properties [29,37,38].…”
