Neuropsychiatric symptoms of Parkinson’s disease: a case report Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease with increasing incidence rates after the age of 50. PD is typically known as a movement disorder, but is often preceded by non-motor symptoms. From the prodromal stage to the late stages, non-motor symptoms may be present. Early recognition of non-motor symptoms is essential and demonstrates the importance of an open-minded treating physician and a good knowledge of all possible symptoms. In this case report and short review of the literature, the neuropsychiatric symptoms (including sleep disorders) in PD are discussed.

Neuropsychiatric symptoms are one of the factors determining quality of life among Parkinson's disease patients, but often remain underestimated by clinicians, especially in early disease stage. Objective: to study the clinical features of affective disorders and comorbid personality traits in prodrome of Parkinson's disease (PD) and their effect on treatment adherence. Materials and methods: 29 patients with PD were studied with questionnaires (Toronto alexithymia scale (TAS); Minimult personal questionnaire; DSM-IV criteria (SCID-II); Hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS); Hamilton Scale for the Assessment of Depression (HAM-D)), and clinical-psychopathological method with objective information collection, neurological examination and neuropsychological testing. Results: Among the patients with PD, personality premorbid features cluster C were most prominent (48% patients). Affective disorders in the prodromal period of PD are dysthymia (13.7%); cyclothymia (6.8%); recurrent depressive disorder (34.4%); and single depressive episode (44.8%). Affective disorders in PD are characterized by late onset, the prevalence of anxiety, asthenic-apathetic symptoms, as well as a high level of alexithymia and somatization. We found the relationship of personality traits and adherence to therapy: the least compliant are histrionic n = 3 (10.3%) and schizotypal n = 2 (6.9%) patients. A high prevalence of dissociative reactions (55%) was noted in response to a diagnosis of PD, which is similar to cancer patients.

On average, nematodes reduce the yield by around 20 to 40% in the first cycle (plant-cane), reaching more than 50% in cases of large populations and highly susceptible cultivars.…”

Damage caused by Meloidogyne javanica and Pratylenchus zeae to sugarcane cultivars

Nematodes are important parasites of sugarcane, significantly reducing the yield and the longevity of the crop. Damage caused by them varies with the susceptibility of sugarcane cultivars; thus, it is important for growers to learn the reaction of new genotypes in order to better direct control measures. The objective of this study was to evaluate the damage caused by nematodes to cultivars newly released for commercial planting. Two experiments were conducted in fields infested by Meloidogyne javanica and Pratylenchus zeae. Both experiments were arranged in split-plot randomized block design. The cultivars were planted in the plots, and two carbofuran 350SC levels, 0 and 7 L ha-1, were applied on two subplots (treated and non-treated subplots). On average, the subplots treated with the nematicide had their yield increased by 10%, compared to non-treated subplots, suggesting that nematodes reduced the yield of cultivars by at least 10%, but such a reduction reached 22% for cultivar IACSP97-7569 in experiment 1 and 17% for CTC20 in experiment 2. Damage was insignificant for cultivars CTC9001, CTC9002, IACSP93-3046, IACSP95-5094, IACSP96-3060, IACSP97-4039 and RB975952 in experiment 1 and for cultivars IACSP97-4039, RB867515 and RB966928 in experiment 2.
