Bipolar disorder, a precursor of Parkinson's disease?

Abstract: Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder predominantly resulting from dopamine depletion in the substantia nigra pars compacta. Some psychiatric disorders may have dopaminergic dysfunction as their substrate. We describe a well-documented case of Parkinson's disease associated with Bipolar Disorder. Although there is some knowledge about the association between these diseases, little is known about its pathophysiology and correlation. We believe that among various hypotheses, many neurotransmitters … Show more

“…Hypomane en manische exacerbaties bij patiënten met een voorgeschiedenis van een bipolaire stemmingsstoornis zijn gekend bij ZvP (40). Net zoals bij patiënten met een depressieve stoornis geeft een bipolaire stoornis een toegenomen risico (odds ratio (OR): 3,21) op het ontwikkelen van ZvP (41,42). Recent onderzoek toonde echter geen onderliggende genetische associatie aan tussen ZvP en bipolaire stemmingsstoornissen (43).…”

“…Hypomania and mania in the structure of bipolar disorder (BD), foreshadowing the manifestion of PD, is rare, however, there are data on isolated clinical cases in the literature [10,62]. According to foreign literature, the prevalence of BD varies from 1% in the case of BD I and 5% in BD II, it is noteworthy that both manic and hypomanic episodes were recorded by patients or their caregivers only until the manifestation of motor symptoms and did not recur after the onset of dopaminergic of therapy, in 3% of patients with BD hypomania changed to depresion [63].…”

“…A large number of plant-parasitic nematodes are associated with sugarcane in Brazil, but Pratylenchus zeae Graham, P. brachyurus (Godfrey) Filipjev & Schuurmans Stekhoven, Meloidogyne javanica Treub) Chitwood and M. incognita (Kofoid & White) are the most important species due to the damage they cause to the crop (10,17,19), which varies with the occurring species, the population density, the soil type and the sugarcane cultivar (10). On average, nematodes reduce the yield by around 20 to 40% in the first cycle (plant-cane), reaching more than 50% in cases of large populations and highly susceptible cultivars.…”
