Biology of COVID-19 and related viruses: Epidemiology, signs, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment

Abstract: Coronaviruses belong to the family Coronaviridae order Nidovirales and are known causes of respiratory and intestinal disease in various mammalian and avian species. Species of coronaviruses known to infect humans are referred to as human coronaviruses (HCoVs). While traditionally, HCoVs have been a significant cause of the common cold, more recently, emergent viruses including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) has caused a global pandemic. Here, we discuss COVID-19 biology, pathology,… Show more

“…Methods for diagnosing COVID-19 include 1) nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT), 2) the serological test, and 3) the hematologic test. 5 Hematologic disorders can be divided into typical, most common, and hematologic abnormalities in conjunction with coagulopathy. 6 For example, a typical abnormality of COVID-19 disease is high levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) 7 and D-dimer.…”

“…Coronaviruses are well‐studied RNA viruses in the Coronaviridae family, order Nidovirales, containing positive single‐stranded RNA, which is identified as the most enormous viral RNA genome. 1 , 2 The virus is surrounded by an envelope with crown‐like spikes on its surface, resulting in a spherical shape roughly 80–120 nm in diameter. 3 …”

“… 4 , 5 Almost all coronaviruses are responsible for self‐limit and mild diseases in humans. 2 Surprisingly, in the ongoing century, three new zoonotic coronaviruses have been discovered, resulting in severe illnesses and global crises. 2 , 6 In 2002, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) was first diagnosed in China, and a decade later, in 2012, the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) was discovered in Saudi Arabia.…”

“…Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19 & COVID) is a contagious pandemic disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus2 (SARS-CoV-2). COVID-19 has variable signs and symptoms, but often include fever, cough, headache, hypoxia, thromboembolic disorders, fatigue, dyspnea, diarrhea, anosmia, and ageusia [1]. About 1/3 of infected people are asymptomatic.…”
