Maxillary Mucormycosis Osteomyelitis in Post COVID-19 Patients: A Series of Fourteen Cases

Abstract: During the current pandemic of COVID-19, numerous manifestations and complications have developed. Patients with COVID-19 are at high risk of fungal infections, such as mucormycosis, that may result directly from COVID-19 infection and/or as a side effect of the drugs used in COVID-19 treatment protocol, such as dexamethasone, hydroxychloroquine, and antibiotics. In this report, we described a series of 14 cases with maxillary mucormycosis osteomyelitis in immediate post-COVID-19 patients.

“…Recent COVID-related manifestations of maxillary mucormycosis osteomyelitis have a distinct pattern of facial bone involvement similar to that of our case. One case series reported 14 patients with comorbid COVID and diabetes presented with various mucor involvement of the maxilla, zygoma, and orbital rim [8] . Another similar case demonstrated mucormycotic osteomyelitis of the nasomaxillary-zygomatic complex following trauma in a middle-aged man [9] .…”

“…Despite the low doses of corticosteroid used, further studies have shown some unwanted side effects. In fact, a growing number of reports on emerging systemic fungal infections concomitant with COVID-19 has been published [ 39 , 40 , 41 , 42 , 43 ], raising concerns about the risk of immunosuppression due to both corticosteroids, particularly among the high-risk populations (diabetes, obesity, and aging).…”
