Biological evaluation of the toxicity of products of pyrolysis and combustion of materials

Abstract: Abstract-This paper presents observations on the toxicity of gases produced by materials under three different combustion conditions. The difficulty of the general problem of toxicity is emphasized and the impossibility-at the present stage in the research-of satisfying the increasing pressure to establish toxicity safety regulations is stated.

“…If these material data, which were determined in seven different European laboratories, are compared, it is clear that there is excellent agreement between the various sets of data-which are not the product of a round-robin test [28,[35][36][37][38][39]. The data given in Table 6 provide an indication of the characteristic values determined for the decomposition products of various species of wood.…”

“…Experimental conditions (such as burning temperature) appear to dominate over the composition of the material being burned (197). A 2011 book (197a) surveys the topic of smoke and combustion products, their formation, transport, measurement, risks, control methods and regulatory aspects.…”
