Biological activity of 1,8 cineole, a major component of essential oil of Ocimum kenyense (Ayobangira) against stored product beetles

Abstract: The efficacy of I ,8 cineole as repellent, toxicant and grain protectant against Sitopldus granarius, S. zeamuis, Triholium castaneunz and Prostephanus truncatus was investiaged in the laboratory using contact toxicity, grain treatment and repellency assays. 1,8 cineole applied topically or imprenated on filter paper, whole wheat as well as maize grains was highly toxic to all the four beetle species. Beetle mortality was dose-dependent with the highest dose of 10 pl/insect evoking 100% mortalities in the beet… Show more

“…The insecticidal activities of various plant parts and products on S. zeamais with similar trends have been reported by IVBIJARO (1983), COBBINAH & APPIAH-KWARTENG (1989), OBENG-OFORI et al (1997), ARANNILEWA et al (2006), ARAYA &EMANA (2009) andEDELDUOK et al (2012). ADEDIRE & AJAYI (1996) recorded 100% mortality of S. zeamais treated with Capsicum frutescens L. 28 DAT on maize grains.…”

“…None of the three extracts showed insecticidal activity against Tribolium castaneum Herbst. The insecticidal activity of the nhexane extract dependent on the active chemical principles and the gross sensitivity of the target pest to these principles [15]. The large proportion of fatty acids might have contributed to the activity of the oil against C. analis.…”
