Biofilm Affecting the Mechanical Integrity of Implant-Abutment Joints

Abstract: This in vitro study evaluated the effect of biofilms on abutment torque loss and wear of implant internal connection surfaces. Materials and Methods: Morse taper abutments were torqued to corresponding implants and then the implant-abutment assemblies were immersed in a biofilm medium for 72 hours. After detorque evaluation, the abutments were removed and the inner implant surfaces were observed via scanning electron microscopy and profilometry. Results: The removal torque values and the implant damaged areas … Show more

“…The fit of the implant‐abutment assembly is dependent on the machining process and properties of the structural materials. However, a poor fit at dental implant‐based connections can result in microgaps at the implant‐abutment connection causing higher displacement of the structural parts on mastication forces or occlusal prematurity from incomplete seating …”

“…The mechanical integrity of different implant‐abutment connections has been studied both in vitro and in vivo . Previous studies have shown a significantly higher percentage of mechanical instability in external hexagon implant connections when compared to internal connections .…”
