Bioconcentrations of herbicides used in sugarcane crops in tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and the risk for human consumption

Abstract: The practice of intensive herbicide use in the sugarcane industry has a high risk of compromising the quality of the water and the organisms that live there due to losses through runoff, leaching and other processes. In this work, the dynamics of four herbicides present in three different mixtures were evaluated through their incorporation and elimination in the muscle tissue of tilapia ( Oreochromis niloticus ). The highest mean values of bioconcentration factors were 1.730 for ametryn,… Show more

“…This has occurred because fish are important sources of protein and are rich in vitamins and omega-3s ( Jackson et al., 2019 ). Among the cultivated species, tilapia is the most produced fish in Brazil, corresponding to over half of the country's production with great economic interest ( Jonsson et al., 2019 ; Piscicultura, 2018 ), and representing 8.3% of the total world fish production, following carp fishes only ( FAO, 2020 ).…”

“…They are considered as a crucial part of agriculture [3]. However, their residues in different fruits are harmful for human health and can cause different diseases through nutrition [4,5]. Therefore, determination of pesticide residues concentration in fruit juices is necessary, specially taking into account its high consumption by children.…”
