Bio‐inspired method to fabricate poly‐dopamine/reduced graphene oxide composite membranes for dyes and heavy metal ion removal

Abstract: Due to the narrow layer spacing, graphene oxide (GO) composite membrane usually exhibits a relatively low water flux in the process of wastewater treatment. In this study, GO was reduced to reduced graphene oxide through a bio-inspired method, which was functionalized modified by poly-dopamine (PDA). Then a series of PDA/reduced graphene oxide sheet films were prepared by vacuum filtration on the surface of cellulose acetate membrane (under the pressure of −0.1 MPa). The result indicated that the novel membran… Show more

“…Adsorption, reverse osmosis, solvent-based extraction, membrane processes, ion exchange, evaporation, and chemical precipitation are common methods for removing heavy metals such as cadmium from contaminated water. [3,[8][9][10][11]. Most of these approaches are not economic and generate a considerable amount of sludge.…”

“…LDH nanoplates were synthesized by coprecipitation method, which have been reported by previous literatures . MgCl 2 ·6H 2 O and AlCl 3 ·6H 2 O with the molar ratio of 2:1 were dissolved in 80 mL deionized water denoted as mix salt solution A.…”

“…Amussel‐inspired bioglue, dopamine, with amusing structures and distinctive properties, could self‐polymerize and adhere onto virtually any type of material surface, regardless of the material's properties . In addition, polydopamine (PDA) coatings possess extremely hydrophilic surface and effectively absorb dye ability owing to various functional groups such as amino, imino, and phenolic hydroxyl . For self‐assembly membrane, PDA coatings are just like a pair of hands, one fixing deposited nanoparticles another one holding the supporting layer tightly …”

“…Dopamine (DA) is secreted from marine mussels. It is easy to polymerize polydopamine (PDA) nanoparticles through oxidation cross-linking reactions in aqueous solution [ 26 ], which has potential applications for biomedicine, bioelectronics, and coatings [ 27 , 28 , 29 ]. PDA has been proven to enhance cell attachment and proliferation [ 30 ] as well as have strong adhesion to various substrates [ 31 ].…”
