Hydrogels have drawn intensive attention as fascinating materials for biomedicine. However, fabricating hydrogels with injectable and self-healing properties remains a challenge. Herein, we reported a biocompatible poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone)/carboxymethyl cellulose (PVP/ CMC) hydrogel with excellent injectable and self-healing properties. The PVP/CMC hydrogel exhibits good biocompatible, injectable, and selfhealing properties. The sol−gel transition of PVP/CMC hydrogels demonstrates an outstanding self-healing behavior, and the bisected hydrogels can self-heal within 30 s. The hydrogels have a good swelling ratio, and the swelling ratio increases with increasing amount of CMC in PVP and reaches a maximum of 2850% at a 1.0:1.5 PVP and CMC ratio. In addition, the hydrogel possesses excellent drug release capacity, and its drug release rate reaches 70%. Moreover, the release of 4-aminosalicylic acid (4-ASA) in the hydrogel can be controlled by adjusting the proportion of the hydrogel. The PVP/CMC hydrogel with excellent biocompatible, injectable, and self-healing properties has great potential for applications in drug release.

Sunscreens can help protect the skin from solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which is harmful to human health. However, traditional sunscreens can penetrate the skin, raising concerns about their safety. Therefore, fabrication of a sunscreen with biocompatible, UV-shielding, and antioxidant properties is pertinent. Herein, a simple method involving the self-polymerization of dopamine to polydopamine (PDA) was proposed for the surface modification of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) to fabricate cellulose nanocrystal/polydopamine/poly(vinyl alcohol) (CNC/PDA/PVA) hydrogels. Compression tests revealed that the CNC/PDA/PVA hydrogel had a compression strength of 5.0 MPa. After UV exposure for 2400 h, the compression strength of the PVA hydrogel decreased markedly from 3.5 to 1.5 MPa, whereas that of the CNC/PDA/PVA hydrogel decreased slightly from 5.0 to 4.8 MPa. Mouse embryonic fibroblast (NIH-3T3) cell experiments showed that the CNC/PDA/PVA hydrogel exhibited excellent biocompatibility. A decrease in the residual 1,1diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) content from 100.0% to 4.0% implied a strong antioxidant capacity of the CNC/PDA/PVA hydrogel. Notably, UV−vis spectroscopy analysis and in vivo mouse experiments demonstrated that the CNC/PDA/PVA hydrogel blocked approximately 99.0% of UV light and prevented UV-induced tissue injury, respectively. These results indicate the potential applications of the prepared CNC/PDA/PVA hydrogel as a UV absorber in next-generation antioxidative and UV-shielding materials.

Hydrogel-based sensors have attracted increasing attention as fascinating materials for various applications in biomedicine and bioelectronics. However, the application of strain sensors underwater remains a great challenge due to the swelling of hydrogels in an aqueous environment. Herein, we report a coacervate conductive polyacrylamide/tannic acid (PAM/TA) composite hydrogel with strong antiswellable properties. The PAM/TA composite hydrogel exhibits a good electrical performance, where the conductivity is found to be 2.7 × 10 −4 S/cm, which is stable during recycling, with an excellent stretchability of 1000% at a tensile strength of 1.5 MPa. The composite hydrogel shows excellent biocompatibility and antiswellable behavior and maintains long-term stability underwater to monitor human movements. In addition, the environmentally friendly composite hydrogel can be recycled repeatedly. The PAM/TA composite hydrogel with excellent antiswelling and stability, good electrical performance, and remarkable stretchability has great potential for the applications as underwater wearable sensors.
