BINS validation – Bayley neurodevelopmental screener in Brazilian preterm children under risk conditions

Abstract: Psychometric researches increase in Brazil. Bayley Infant Neurodevelopment Screener - BINS (Aylward, 1995) is a low cost, fast instrument. In 10' it classifies children under developmental risk degrees. This research purpose was investigating BINS psychometric properties. 61 low-income Brazilian preterm, were divided in groups: 31 children (12 months) and 30 children (24 months), both sex, birth weight < 2000 g. “…For example, authors of the Dutch translation of the ASQ describe using 3 separate forward and backward translations but do not include details such as who carried them out. 34 Similarly, Guedes et al 43 report using back translation in adapting the Portuguese Bayley Infant Neurodevelopmental Screener (BINS), followed by, "semantic adaptation" but do not provide further details.…”

“…30 Finally, both the Portuguese BINS and the Malawian Denver were pilot-tested on children in the target populations, after which edits were made based on feedback. 43,79 Cultural Adaptations Peer-reviewed publications included evidence that cultural considerations were taken into account for 28 out of 63 translations identified. Some articles gave specific examples of changes that were made.…”

“…However, there are no studies about the translation and transcultural adaptation of the Brazilian Portuguese version of the Bayley-III scale, or its psychometric properties. There is a single study about the Bayley Infant Neurodevelopment Screener for children aged 12-24 months) (Guedes, Primi, & Kopelman, 2011). Therefore, studies on these topics are still necessary.…”

“…Therefore, community-wide efforts to improve the social and physical environments within families, daycare, and neighborhoods are vital to reducing cumulative, negative effects on child outcomes from the beginning of life (Engle et al, 2011). has been a controversy in the reliability of Korean Denver-II even though many developmental research are still being conducted using DDST-II in both Korean and other countries (Drachler et al, 2007;Ga & Kwon, 2011;Guedes, Primi, & Kopelman, 2011). Further research is needed to establish the reliability and the validity of Korean Denver-II and develop more appropriate developmental instrument for Korean children. There is another limitation.…”
