BIM Integration in Augmented Reality Model

Abstract: Building information modeling (BIM) is one of the most popular technologies contributing to information handling. However, the technology's contribution to fieldwork is very limited due to the limited interaction between the real and virtual world. Integrating BIM with augmented reality (AR) is believed to highly increase BIM's applicability to fieldwork. Therefore, the aim of the study is to examine the credibility of BIM integration into AR (AR-BIM) in the construction industry. A case study is adopted, comp… Show more

“…The essence of building information modeling is the ability to add useful information [10] using BIM models that are more than geometric representations; therefore, they can be viewed in various dimensions, from 3D (design planning), 4D (scheduling), 5D (costing), 6D (life cycle information) and 7D (facility management) [11] (Figure 2) and, the data models used differ from each other according to the schema used both to organize the data and the schema language to transport the data.…”

“…Augmented reality will be implemented for on-site construction projects to monitor and document project progress [4] by connecting the technology to the users' devices to perform construction tasks remotely. The aim of applying augmented reality would be to gain indoor-outdoor setting of visualised design models, layout analysis using several layers of data, and enhanced quality inspection made possible by integrating BIM [5]. Three leading technologies that power augmented reality are Simultaneous Location and Mapping (SLAM) [6,7], depth tracking [8], and image processing [9].…”

“…The integration of BIM with augmented reality (AR) is believed to highly increase BIM's applicability to fieldwork. Chai et al [17] examine the credibility of BIM integration into AR (AR-BIM) in the construction industry and provide a simple case to demonstrate that BIM is compatible with integration with the AR platform.…”
