Biliverdin and bilirubin sulfonate inhibit monosodium urate induced sterile inflammation in the rat

Abstract: Background: Biliverdin, a by-product of haem catabolism, possesses potent endogenous antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Bilirubin-C10-sulfonate (BRS), an active metabolite formed after enteral administration of BV in the rat, also possess antioxidant properties. Therefore, we investigated the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity of BV and BRS in an in vivo model of monosodium urate induced sterile inflammation. Methods: Subcutaneous air pouches were created on the dorsal flanks of Wistar rats (… Show more

“…The present study investigated the correlation between IL-18 and -10 in breast cancer, as well as the association of their --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- expression with the clinical pathological indices of breast cancer. IL-18 is a multifunctional immunomodulatory cytokine that exists in the form of an inactive precursor; it exerts biological activities only after being sheared by IL-1β invertase (26). In the present study, IL-18 was primarily expressed in breast cancer cells, and it was highly expressed in tumor cells in the majority of the patients with breast cancer.…”

“…Eicosapentaenoic acid is an omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid, which can effectively regulate the body's oxidative stress level and inhibit the NF-κB signaling pathway ( Nikoloff et al, 2021 ). As a by-product of haem catabolism, biliverdin possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the expression of inflammatory cytokines IL-6, MCP-1and TNF-α ( Shiels et al, 2020 ). In addition, N-acetylneuraminic acid has been reported to improve lipid metabolism disorder by reducing serum TC and TG, and reduce oxidative stress injury by elevating the activities of antioxidant enzymes ( Guo et al, 2016 ).…”

“…Apart from being the major bile pigment of the American bullfrog Rana catesbeiana 6 , it is also likely to be present in the lumen of the human gastrointestinal tract, where it is produced from biliverdin by the enteric bacteria Citrobacter youngae 24 . This pigment, similar to other known linear tetrapyrroles, has important biological properties and is implicated in protection against oxidative (and also potentially in inflammatory) processes 24 , 25 .…”
