Bilateral non-familial renal cell carcinoma

Abstract: Non-familial bilateral RCC patients represent a distinct subpopulation of renal cancer patients with a good overall prognosis. Partial nephrectomy is an integral part of the surgical management. Although most bilateral tumors present synchronously, asynchronous lesions may occur many years after original nephrectomy, thus committing the patient to long-term follow-up.

“…Compared with radical (contralateral kidney) and partial nephrectomy, the frequency of de novo tumors after treatment is comparable [21 -23]. As synchronous renal cell carcinoma occurs with a frequency of up to 4.7 %, it is likely that some of the analyzed patients of this review had an occult tumor at the time of initial RFA [24]. The relevance of synchronous and metachronous renal tumors should not be underestimated in terms of cardiovascular-specific morbidity and mortality.…”

“…RFA can also benefit the 3 to 5% of patients with sporadic bilateral RCC. 3,4 Given the increased importance of percutaneous RFA in the treatment of renal tumors, this article reviews the clinical and technical considerations needed to perform RFA in this organ system, the associated risks and complications, and the approaches commonly used in our practice.…”
