Estimation of the Hourly Global Solar Irradiation on the Tilted and Oriented Plane of Photovoltaic Solar Panels Applied to Greenhouse Production

Agrometeorological stations have horizontal solar irradiation data available, but the design and simulation of photovoltaic (PV) systems require data about the solar panel (inclined and/or oriented). Greenhouses for agricultural production, outside the large protected production areas, are usually off-grid; thus, the solar irradiation variable on the panel plane is critical for an optimal PV design. Modeling of solar radiation components (beam, diffuse, and ground-reflected) is carried out by calculating the extraterrestrial solar radiation, solar height, angle of incidence, and diffuse solar radiation. In this study, the modeling was done using Simulink-MATLAB blocks to facilitate its application, using the day of the year, the time of day, and the hourly horizontal global solar irradiation as input variables. The rest of the parameters (i.e., inclination, orientation, solar constant, albedo, latitude, and longitude) were fixed in each block. The results obtained using anisotropic models of diffuse solar irradiation of the sky in the region of Castile and León (Spain) showed improvements over the results obtained with isotropic models. This work enables the precise estimation of solar irradiation on a solar panel flexibly, for particular places, and with the best models for each of the components of solar radiation.

Solar panels can achieve the highest yield when they are oriented in the right way as the influence of the tilt angles can lead to a high impact on the performance. This paper demonstrates the effect of the tilt angle on the final yield and maximum utilization of solar energy. The annual optimal tilt angle of the solar panels for Pune was found out using the Liu and Jordan model. The optimal tilts yielding an increase of 7% was found out to be 0° on the months starting from April and lasting till September and 40° starting from October and holding at 40° till March. By changing the tilt angle every month, there was an increase in the yield by more than 8%. For better yield and maximum utilization of solar energy, optimizing the tilt angles of solar panels monthly or even twice a year is effective based on the study. Most of the panels are fixed at an angle equal to the latitude of the place and oriented towards the Southern sky in the northern hemisphere. Measurements of the monthly average global solar radiation, monthly average temperatures, and monthly average relative humidity were compared. Further ahead regression correlation for a linear model was carried and the regression coefficients a and b were found out to be 0.2804 and 0.3618 respectively.

The evolution of solar photovoltaic systems (PV) in the last decade has been marvellous around the world. This growing in using of PV technique hinge on the electrical load profile that required to be covered and the rate of the electricity that can be generated from the areas where the solar cells to be installed. The production of PV systems is based on the fuel which is represented by the solar radiation. In this study, an algorithm has been proposed to optimize the solar tilt angle based on MATLAB software (m-file) in order to maximize the PV generation. Monthly and annually optimal tilt angles are suggested for different case studies those are: Najaf, California and New Delhi. Also, the estimation of solar radiation for each month is calculated according to their optimal tilt angles. The obtained results indicate that the yearly gain of solar radiation from orientation solar panels is approximately 18% for Najaf city and a high gain values for winter months with very small energy gains for summery months, and so on for other case studies. This proposed algorithm is general program and can be applied for any site on the earth by changing the latitude and longitude of the desired area.
