For all kinds of reasons, rework, i.e. the transformation of products not ful lling preset speci cations into products that do, is an important issue in process industries. Despite a considerable amount of published research on planning and control of rework, and in addition many papers referring to the existence of rework in the process industries, hardly any attention has been paid to the consequences of many process industries speci c characteristics for execution, planning and control of rework operations. Here are identi ed the characteristics of the process industries that in uence the possibilities for rework in these industries, based on a framework provided by Flapper and Jensen (International Journal of Production Research, 1999, to be published). How the available operations management literature assists in determining operational strategies for planning and control of rework in process industries is assessed.

The paper deals with batch scheduling problems in process industries where final products arise from several successive chemical or physical transformations of raw materials using multi-purpose equipment. In batch production mode, the total requirements of intermediate and final products are partitioned into batches. The production start of a batch at a given level requires the availability of all input products. We consider the problem of scheduling the production of given batches such that the makespan is minimized. Constraints like minimum and maximum time lags between successive production levels, sequence-dependent facility setup times, finite intermediate storages, production breaks, and time-varying manpower contribute to the complexity of this problem. We propose a new solution approach using models and methods of resource-constrained project scheduling, which (approximately) solves problems of industrial size within a reasonable amount of time.Zusammenfassung. Die Arbeit behandelt Batch-Scheduling-Probleme in der Prozeßindustrie. In mehreren aufeinanderfolgenden chemischen oder physikalischen Transformationsschritten werden aus Rohstoffen auf Mehrzweckanlagen Endprodukte hergestellt. Wird die Anlage im Batch-Modus betrieben, so werden die Gesamtbedarfe an Zwischen-und Endprodukten in Chargen unterteilt. Der Produktionsbeginn einer Charge auf einer Stufe erfordert die Verfügbarkeit aller Eingangsstoffe. Die Modularisierung von logistischen Gewerken und Entwicklung einer automatischen Anordnungsplanung von modularen Containeranlagen ist ein Ziel des Forschungsprojekts ModuLOG. Erste Untersuchungen bestätigten die Notwendigkeit neuer Förder‐ und Lagermodule für die modulare Chemieproduktion. Das in dem Forschungsprojekt konzeptionierte Containerdurchlaufregal wird dabei den Anforderungen der modularen Produktion gerecht. Neben den Produktions‐ und den entwickelten Lagermodulen existieren weitere Module in einer Containeranlage, die, für einen effizienten Betrieb, auf intelligente Weise zueinander angeordnet werden müssen. Dies wird durch die entwickelte automatische Anordnungsplanung ermöglicht.
