Special demands on production planning and control in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. The chemical and pharmaceutical market place is in a phase of structural changes. The decrease of product development times as well as the minimization of production cost are important success factors. Computer based material management and manufacturing planning and control systems also help to improve the efficiency of production. However, systems developed for discrete manufacturing industries are not applicable in chemical and pharmaceutical environments. This paper surveys the specific features of the chemical and pharmaceutical industries concerning production planning and their impact on information technologies.
