Benthic Macroalgae of Shark Bay, Western Australia

Abstract: One hundred and sixty one taxa of benthic macro-algae are reported from Shark Bay, Western Australia, growing either on subtidal rock platforms, on the extensive sandflats that dominate the bay, or as epiphytes on seagrasses and other algae. In addition many species survive as drift algae amongst the seagrass beds. Tropical taxa predominate. The Rhodophyta are represented by the greatest number of taxa, but these tend to be inconspicuous epiphytes. Members of the Chlorophyta are the most conspicuous in most ar… Show more

“…We aimed to quantify differences phenolic concentrations of seaweeds throughout coastal Western Australia. The coastline of Western Australia stretches almost 20,000 km (including offshore islands) and encompasses a variety of temperate and tropical macroalgal assemblages (Kendrick et al 1990; Huisman and Borowitzka 2003;Wernberg et al 2012;Huisman 2015). This resulted in sampling of different macroalgal species at each study location with little species continuity (Table 2).…”

“…Even though this species has been recorded on different substrates: mollusc shells (Sanchez-Rodriguezet al 1989), on rocky platforms (Mateo-Cid and Mendoza-Gonzalez 1991), on rocks and pebbles (Mendoza-Gonzälez and Mateo-Cid 1992), and on mangrove roots (Kendrick et al 1990, Mateo-Cid et al 1993, all are hard substrates.
