Bedding control on landslides: a methodological approach for computer-aided mapping analysis

Abstract: Abstract. Litho-structural control on the spatial and temporal evolution of landslides is one of the major typical aspects on slopes constituted of structurally complex sequences. Mainly focused on instabilities of the earth flow type, a semi-quantitative analysis has been developed with the purpose of identifying and characterizing litho-structural control exerted by bedding on slopes and its effects on landsliding. In quantitative terms, a technique for azimuth data interpolation, Non-continuous Azimuth Dist… Show more

“…LIMs are also used to determine the statistics of landslide size (area and volume) (Malamud et al, 2004a;, and to investigate correlations between the location and abundance of landslides and the local geological structure (Grelle et al, 2011;Marchesini et al, 2013;Santangelo et al, 2015b). Our results revealed that the geographical accuracy of the location (and hence the shape and size) of the landslides depends on the size of the slope failures (Fig.…”

“…Based on our experience, and the production of LIMs for more than 4 ×10 5 km 2 in different physiographical and climatic settings in Italy (Antonini et al, 1993(Antonini et al, , 2002bArdizzone et al, 2012;Cardinali et al, 2001;Guzzetti and Cardinali, 1989;Santangelo et al, 2015a), and elsewhere in the world (e.g. , we identify three main steps for the production of a LIM (Fig.…”

“…The understanding of the stress orientation will improve the knowledge of deformation mechanisms, which is crucial for the implementation of a viable monitoring system. Irfan (1999), Revellino et al (2010), Grelle et al (2011), Aucelli et al (2013), Prakash et al (2015) have reported structurally-controlled landslides. Investigation of the landslides revealed that the geo-structural settings predisposed the slopes to factors triggering mass movements, which is consistent with Fookes and Wilson (1966), Zaruba andMencl (1969), andVarnes (1978).…”
