Beard Restoration Using a Free Puboinguinal Hair‐Bearing Flap

Abstract: A free puboinguinal hair-bearing flap was transferred with anastomosis of the external pudendal vessels, for reconstruction of a bearded chin in an adult male. Although the flap does not match the skin of the chin in texture or color, it can provide an excellent beard in terms of the color, density and quality of hair growth. Donorsite morbidity is minimal.

“…Partial or complete mustache, beard/goatee, and sideburn loss can be satisfactorily restored/reconstructed with tattooing, excision closure, hair-bearing graft/flaps, or follicular unit transplantation (FUT). 3,[13][14][15][16][17][18][19] At present, the FUT technique enables transplantation of naturally appearing facial hairs because its small size provides great convenience to the surgeons in their placements with the desired hair density and better angled hair orientation. By using this technique, restoring/ reconstructing mustache, beard/goatee, and sideburns has become popular procedures because of their potentially exceptional results.…”

“…However, psychological problems in hypogonadic men are common and result from a boyish appearance. Partial or complete loss of hair in the mustache and beard area may be satisfactorily reconstructed by tattooing, excision and primary suture, hair‐bearing graft, local pedicle or free hair‐bearing flaps, or follicular unit transplantation 10–14 . Hair transplantation in burn patients has been reported to yield good results 15 .…”
