Baker’s cyst in pediatric patients: Ultrasonographic characteristics

Abstract: Objective: Evaluate incidence, etiology, and sonographic features of Baker's cyst in children. Materials and methods: We examined 16 pediatric patients, with the clinical diagnosis of Baker's cyst. The possibility to confirm or to exclude the presence of the lesion, assess the structure, presence of bilateralism and joint effusion were considered. “…11,12) [7]. They can communicate or not with the joint cavity [7][8][9]. A variety of disorders such as overuse [10], trauma [11], infection, hemorrhage, arthropathy, internal joint derangement, villonodular synovitis [12][13][14], and synovial osteochondromatosis [15] may cause the accumulation of fluid within the bursae and thickening of the synovia, allowing visualization on sonography.…”

“…In 1877, Baker published his experience with this entity, which caused this type of cyst to be named after him. Baker's cyst is de ned as an abnormal cluster of synovial uid in the gastrocnemius-semimembranosus bursa or as a herniation of the posterior joint capsule with synovial uid tension [17][18][19]. Changes in both static and dynamic alignment of the lower extremities could alter balance and gait, and trigger pain throughout the lower limbs [20].…”
