Bacteremia Caused by Aeromonas hydrophila Complex in the Caribbean Islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe

Abstract: Aeromonas species are Gram-negative bacilli of the water environment whose survival appears facilitated by warm climates. There have been no reports on Aeromonas species in the [corrected] Caribbean to date. Our aim was to describe clinical and bacteriological features in patients presenting with such bacteremia in Martinique and Guadeloupe. During a 14-year period, we retrospectively identified 37 patients. The mean age was 55 years and in 89% of cases underlying disease such as digestive diseases, cutaneous … Show more

“…are ubiquitous in aquatic environment, such as fresh or brackish water, sewage, soil, and tap water in temperate or subtropical countries (Tang et al, 2014), and can cause invasive and fatal infections, such as severe soft tissue infection or bacteremia (Ko et al, 2000). In contrast to previous belief, more and more cases with Aeromonas bacteremia developed in the setting of healthcare-associated infections (Hochedez et al, 2010;Wang et al, 2009).…”

“…Moreover, bacteremia is another common type of infection caused by Aeromonas species [3]–[6], [15][20]. In contrast to previous belief, more and more cases with Aeromonas bacteremia developed in the setting of healthcare-associated infections [18], [20]. In this study, we investigated the clinical characteristics of bacteremia due to Aeromonas species, especially in the setting of nosocomial infections, in a regional hospital in southern Taiwan over a 5-year period and assessed the risk factors associated with mortality due to this disease.…”

“…In fish, A. hydrophila causes ulcerative lesions, exophthalmia, fins erosion and rotting, haemorrhagic septicaemia, and may lead to death (Cipriano et al 2001;Barcellos et al 2008). This bacterium is associated with opportunistic infections, which can also affect humans causing diarrhoea, urinary infections and, in more serious cases, death (Hochedez et al 2010;Viswanatan et al 2015).…”
