Backshoring and nearshoring: An overview

Abstract: Increasingly, economies that have traditionally benefited from offshoring are losing some of their strategical advantages, with a consequent increase in backshoring by developed economies. This paper describes the phenomenon and tries to shed light on the current challenges, trends, and debates in the area, and on the main determinants of backshoring. A new phenomenon known as nearshoring is also analysed—this consists of relocating some previously offshored manufacturing activities so that they are now close … Show more

“…A lively debate is currently underway between scholars, practitioners, and policymakers, who are called to solve the dilemma of reshoring or not [8]. In fact, bringing manufacturing back home is one of the current imperatives for research [9], because it still calls for better understanding the phenomenon per se and the related ones, named backshoring (or the relocation back to the home country of the firm) and nearshoring (or the relocation to a closer neighboring country) [10][11][12]. This research gap has led to the emergence of one of the major questions that call for an answer in the literature.…”

“…These trends continuing will offer immense opportunities for LAC to reset its place in North American GVCs, which Asia had taken away in the 1990s. LAC is nearer, its labour is cheaper than in the US, and intellectual property risk is less than Asia’s (Piatanesi and Arauzo‐Carod, 2019). This unique opportunity will not last; LAC’s public and private sectors must exploit it now.…”
