This paper surveys recent evidence on the determinants of (national and/or foreign) industrial location. We find that the basic analytical framework has remained essentially unaltered since the early contributions of the early 1980's while, in contrast, there have been significant advances in the quality of the data and, to a lesser extent, the econometric modelling. We also identify certain determinants (neoclassical and institutional factors) that tend to provide largely consistent results across the reviewed studies. In light of this evidence, we finally suggest future lines of research.
The aim of this article is to show the main determinants of industrial location processes. To better illustrate phenomena such as agglomeration economies, which are normally studied at the regional level, we use local data. We use the Poisson model to identify the location patterns of firms. Our main statistical source is the Spanish Industrial Establishments Register, which has plant-level microdata on location of new industrial establishments. Our results show that the characteristics of a municipality strongly affect the location decisions of industrial establishments and that these decisions also depend on the sector in which the firm is located and the size of the firm. ABSTRACT:The objective of this paper is to analyse the influence of agglomeration economies on location decisions taken by new firms inside metropolitan areas. As we assume that these economies differ according to firms' level of technology, our sample comprises new firms from high, intermediate and low technology industries. We are particularly interested in analysing the effects of agglomeration economies that are felt over very short distances (inside the metropolitan areas. We introduce in our estimation the effect of the central city as a determinant for the location of new firms in the rest of the metropolitan area. Keywords: Industrial location, cities, metropolitan areas, agglomeration economies.
