Backhaul-Aware Dimensioning and Planning of Millimeter-Wave Small Cell Networks

Abstract: The massive deployment of Small Cells (SCs) is increasingly being adopted by mobile operators to face the exponentially growing traffic demand. Using the millimeter-wave (mmWave) band in the access and backhaul networks will be key to provide the capacity that meets such demand. However, dimensioning and planning have become complex tasks, because the capacity requirements for mmWave links can significantly vary with the SC location. In this work, we address the problem of SC planning considering the backhaul … Show more

“…The time index τ is a superset of π; that is, each time slot π contains one or more time slots τ, if a a τis in this time slot is set to one, α πis is also set to one. For Constraint (C. 16), each task should be only served in one server in the time slot π. Constraint (C. 17) implies the decision variable η πi is determined by α πis − α (π−1)is . Figure 3 shows an example for calculating η 21 for task 1 with two servers, and we can observe that the η 21 is set to one due to the migration occurs.…”

“…For pursuing a positive user experience, many operators also switch their focus on how to improve the QoS [15]. An orchestrator for network operation implemented by applying resource scheduling and resource allocation strategies is crucial [6,13,16].…”

“…More than ten times more than nowadays will be the increment of the number of connected devices. The transition from microwave to millimeter-wave (MMW) frequency bands may be achieved in gradual steps to take advantage of the higher capacity, decreasing the system latency, higher bandwidth, as well as a large amount of available spectrum [1][2][3][4]. There are many frequency bands assigned by the FCC [3,5].…”
