Azadirachta indica influenced biosynthesis of super-paramagnetic iron-oxide nanoparticles and their applications in tannery water treatment and X-ray imaging

Abstract: Super-paramagnetic iron-oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) have been exploited from a very long time and are researched profoundly due to their unique properties. In this study, SPIONs were synthesized using environmentally accepted green synthesis process where Azadirachta indica leaf extract was used as one of the reducing agents along with basic metal precursors used in chemical processes. The synthesized SPIONs were characterised using microscopic analysis (SEM, TEM, and AFM), spectroscopic analysis (FT-IR, UV-V… Show more

“…Nanotechnology is a blooming field of science and has variety of applications in the field of science (Kreuter et al 2003). Applications of nanoparticles in various fields include agriculture, drug delivery (Samrot et al 2019a), imaging , Justin et al 2018, Sruthi et al 2018, Samrot et al 2018a, mosquito larvicidal activity (Samrot et al 2019b), environmental remediation (Samrot et al 2019c), bioactivity including anticancer and antibacterial activity (Samrot et al 2016, Samrot et al 2018b, Samrot et al 2019a. The increased usage creates demand in the production alleviating the risks associated with improper disposal of metal nanoparticles.…”

“…Super-paramagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) include magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ), maghemite (ÉŁ-Fe 2 O 3 ), hematite (α-Fe 2 O 3 ), and other ferrites 19. These features and properties of iron oxide nanoparticles have enabled them to be utilized in a lot of applications such as targeted drug delivery,20 hyperthermia,21,22 imaging,23,24 tissue engineering,25 stem cell labelling,26 in-vitro-bio-separation, and heavy metal removal 27. Although used in diverse ways, the major challenge faced when working with SPIONs is to make them monodispersed which is possible by surface engineering or surface modification by a functionalizing agent or a potent biopolymer.…”

“…However, the percentage adsorption decreases after a particular time. This might be because of the decline in total adsorption surface area available for the dye inferable to overlapping or aggregation of adsorption sites [34].…”
