Awake Tracheostomy: Indications, Complications and Outcome

Abstract: Whether the etiology of the AT was related to HN oncological disease or not was the most important clinical factor in our cohort. The non-oncologic group was significantly younger, suffered from more urgent events and tended to have more complications (nonsignificant). ATs had a 97.3% rate of immediate survival, a 5.4% risk of major irreversible complications and a 2.7% risk of mortality.

“…According to Doron Sagiv et al, awake tracheostomies had a slightly higher risk of immediate postoperative complications [11]. In our study, the awake tracheostomy group had slightly more immediate postoperative complications such as pneumothorax, pneumomediastinum, and subcutaneous emphysema complications, which would be expected with the greater number of revision and awake tracheostomies performed.…”
