The objective of this study was to evaluate programs of supplementary lighting for calves in individual shelters with different roof materials, as a strategy to stimulate concentrate consumption and the reduction of the milk feeding period and increase financial viability. Twenty seven dairy crossed Holstein × Gir female calves were randomly distributed in individual shelters with three different roofing materials (cement fiber tile, recycled tile and thatched roofs), associated with three different light duration (12, 16 and 20 h) and with three repetitions. The experimental design was completely randomized in 3 × 3 factorial arrangement. There was no interaction between the types of roofs × supplemental light; also, there was no significant effect of the covering types on the average consumption of concentrate and occurance of diarrhea in calves. On the other hand 20 h of lighting stimulated the consumption of concentrate and allowed weaning of calves at 55 days of age and 20% reduction in the cost of rearing animals during milk feeding stage.

Thermal discomfort inside facilities is one of the factors responsible for low productivity of caprines in the Brazilian Northeast region, because inadequate weather conditions can cause elevated rectal temperature, increased respiratory rate, decreased food ingestion and reduced production. The present paper aimed to study the behavior of physiological thermoregulation of the animals (respiratory rate -RR and rectal temperature -RT) at four different times of the day (8 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.) and their relation to bioclimatic indexes (Temperature Humidity Index -THI, Black Globe Humidity Index -BGHI and Radiant Heat Load -RHL) in order to determine whether the type of covering used in the animals facilities (ceramic covering -CC, asbestos cement covering -AC and straw covering -SC) interferes with the physiology of thermoregulation. The time of data collection was related to the values of environmental and physiological variables. At 2 p.m. it was found the highest values of Radiant Heat Load on the three types of covering. The values of RT and RR were higher at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and the straw tile provided better thermal conditions of microclimate for the animals. The increased RR maintained the caprines homeothermy.

R ESU M ONeste trabalho objetivou-se realizar imagens termográficas da superfície de telhas visando avaliar sua temperatura superficial. Os tratamentos mensurados se constituíram de: T1 -Telha Coppo Venneto Ondulada Cinza; T2 -Telha Coppo Venneto Ondulada Marfim; T3 -Telha Plana Marfim; T4 -Telha Plana Cinza; T5 -Telha de Barro Colonial esmaltada; T6 -Telha Ondulada de Cimento Amianto e T7 -Telha de Barro Francesa. Cada unidade experimental foi composta de três telhas sobrepostas uma sobre a outra, exceto no tratamento de telha ondulada de cimento amianto. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados com três repetições. Os dados coletados em cada horário foram analisados por meio do modelo de medidas repetidas, utilizando-se o procedimento MIXED do SAS. As temperaturas da superfície inferior das telhas foram muito parecidas ao longo do dia. As telhas com coloração marfim obtiveram melhores valores de temperatura superior e inferior que as telhas com coloração cinza, nas respectivas categorias. A telha de barro colonial obteve maior temperatura da superfície inferior que as demais telhas. The evaluated treatments were: T1 -grey Coppo Venneto wave tiles ; T2 -Ivory-colored Coppo Venneto wave tiles; T3 -Ivory-colored, plain tile; T4 -plain, grey roof tile; T5 -glazed clay colonial tile; T6 -Asbestos wave tile T7 -French clay tiles . Each treatment was made up of three tiles which were piled one top of the other, except for the asbestos tiles. The experimental design was in randomized block with three repetitions. The data which were collected in each set time were analyzed through the repetitive measure model, using the MIXED procedure -SAS. The temperatures of the inferior surface of the tiles were very similar throughout the day. The ivory colored tiles had better superior and inferior temperature than the grey-colored ones in their respective category. The glazed, clay colonial tile presented a larger temperature of inferior surface than the other tiles.
