Automotive Consumerism towards Car Safety in Malaysia

This research aims to investigate the relationship between the technology capability and car manufacturer understanding and awareness of the New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP). The surveys were performed to collect the data among Malaysian car manufacturers and 90 sets of questionnaires were returned and analysed using SPSS software with the main statistical analysis highlighted are Pearson correlation and multiple regression to examine the research hypothesis. Interviews were also conducted among the car manufacturers to investigate further the research objective. The research findings concluded that there is a significant relationship between the technology capability and car manufacturers on their understanding and awareness of the ASEAN NCAP requirements. Hence, this study proved that technology capability is the essential factor for car manufacturers and it is one of the main concerns for them in producing a new safer car design.

Priority Factor Influencing Public Interest in Owning Vehicle with AEB System

The Autonomous Emergency Brake (AEB) is a part of autonomous vehicle technologies and the technology was developed to reduce human errors that lead to a road accident. This survey investigates the priority factor influencing the public in acquiring vehicles with the AEB system. In this study, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) framework was used to determine the public’s rating of importance of the availability of the AEB system in their vehicles. Cronbach’s alpha was used to check for reliability of survey items. With a score of 0.8, it suggested that the items had relatively high internal consistency. The results show that the top factors that influence public interest in having vehicle with AEB are the reduction of the severity of injury and crashes.

Malaysian Consumer Awareness and Perspectives towards ASEAN NCAP

ASEAN NCAP has been in existence for the last eight years. Over these years, multiple initiatives had been undertaken to stress the importance and relevance of vehicle safety to the consumers. This study is undertaken to study and gauge the levels of understanding with regards to the vehicle safety assessment through ASEAN NCAP, amongst the consumer in Malaysia. A total of 428 respondents was involved in this study and the survey had been conducted throughout the major cities in Malaysia. The analysis shows that three main factors contributes to the buying decision of vehicles in Malaysia, they are fuel economy, comfort technology and safety assist technology. Air conditioning and the navigation system were the most important technology that is preferred by the consumers in their selection of vehicles to purchase. The study also reveals that an emphasis is placed on vehicle safety, as the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), the Anti-Theft Devices/Alarms and the Emergency Braking Assist (EBA), as being the required priority when choosing a vehicle to be purchased. In comparison with a previous study done, it further shows that the awareness and the level of understanding of ASEAN NCAP had increased to 36 %. This value indicates that the effectiveness of these numerous promotional activities conjured by various stakeholders has had an impact. Nevertheless, continuous effort needs to be effected to ensure the ASEAN NCAP becomes a sensible benchmark for potential buyers in Malaysia in making purchase decisions.
