Australian Journalists' Professional and Ethical Values

Abstract: In this first comprehensive national study of Australian journalists, the author surveyed 1,068 news people in all mainstream news media. Australian journalists are similar to their U.S. colleagues in distributions of age, sex, and socio-economic background, but have less formal education. Like U.S. journalists, Australians have mixed professional and ethical values and are committed both to investigative and to news-disseminating roles of the media.

“…Through the work of Johnstone et al (1976), Weaver and Wilhoit (1986, 1991, 1996Weaver et al, 2007), and most recently Weaver and Wilnat (2012), we can see how the journalist's role has evolved over the decades by analyzing their routines. Routines can be defined as those practices and tasks that are repeatedly done throughout the day by the journalist (Weaver et al, 2007).…”

“…While several researchers have compared the values of United States journalists to those operating in other countries such as Australia (Henningham, 1996), Russia (Wu & Weaver, 1996), Kuwait (Al-Rasheed, 1998) and the Far East (Zhu, Weaver, Lo, Chen, & Wu, 1997), few researchers have examined differences in American newsrooms between online journalists and editors and their traditional counterparts. Brill (2001) surveyed 66 online journalists and found that online journalists were aligned with traditional journalists from the Weaver and Wilhoit (1996) study in terms of the disseminator function of the media.…”
