Atopy patch test (APT) in the diagnosis of food allergy in children with atopic dermatitis

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Atopic Dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease. Food allergens are important in the pathogenesis in 1/3 of the cases. Several mechanisms are involved in the pathogenesis of Atopic Dermatitis. Immediate reactions are identified by both measurement of specific IgE and skin prick test. Atopy Patch Test seems to be relevant in the investigation of patients with suspected delayed-type reactions. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the standardization of this method concerning allergen concentration, occlu… Show more

“…65,66 The subgroup of moderate to severe AD have a higher risk of sensitization to food allergens and this is translated into a high risk of true food allergy. 65,67,68 The clinical history, along with an allergology evaluation, can help to identify suspect foods, but it is necessary to verify with restriction diets for 3 to 4 weeks or controlled oral challenges.…”

“…History, sIgE, and SPT are almost only used to identify type I (IgE-mediated) reactions. However, despite some limitations to its use, the gold standard for food allergy is still the double-blind, placebo-controlled, oral food challenge [8].…”
