Association of lipoprotein lipase polymorphism rs2197089 with serum lipid concentrations and LPL gene expression

Abstract: Many single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have been reported to be associated with lipid concentrations in recent genome-wide association studies. The aim of this study was to validate the associations of rs2197089 in the lipoprotein lipase (LPL) gene with serum lipid concentrations and gene expression levels in the Chinese Han population and examine the potential interactions. A total of 9339 participants were recruited and genotyped for rs2197089. Gene expression levels of LPL in blood cells of 309 partici… Show more

“…The association of LPL polymorphisms with lipid levels has been controversial [ 6 ]. Most of the SNPs studied in this gene are rare and limited either to single families or are restricted to isolated geographic regions, whereas, common variants show differences in allele frequencies among different populations [ 26 ]. In our study, minor allele (G) of the SNP LPL rs328 was found to be protective as its presence lowers TG and raises HDL-C.…”

“…The associations between genotypes and phenotypes can be modified by gene-environment interactions. Effect modification of the associations between LPL SNPs and serum lipid concentrations by interactions with cigarette smoking has been reported (Lee et al, 2004;Kathiresan et al, 2008;Kooner et al, 2008;Pyun et al, 2012;Mo et al, 2013). In the present study, association of the LPL SNP with HDL cholesterol by smoking status was also examined.…”
