Association of IL-1β, IL-1Ra and FABP1 gene polymorphisms with the metabolic features of polycystic ovary syndrome

Abstract: Polymorphism in genes encoding cytokines and proteins involved in lipid metabolism can provide insights into the genetics of the disease and may contribute to assess the associated risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), dyslipidemia and metabolic syndrome (MetS) associated with PCOS.

“…FABP1-targeting microRNAs could significantly reduce FABP1 expression at translational level and ameliorate hepatocyte steatosis and injury 30 . Women with polycystic ovary syndrome having FABP1 rs2197076 GG genotype had higher Ferriman Gallwey score and lower lipid accumulation product index than the AA+AG genotype carriers 31 . Substitution from adenine to guanine at 2919872 position, significantly reduced serum triglyceride concentration and FABP1 promoter activity 32 .…”

“…A recent study by Rashid et al . ( 95 ) involving 95 women with PCOS and 45 healthy women as controls analyzed the connection between IL-1β and IL-1Ra gene polymorphisms with the risk of PCOS. The findings indicated that polymorphisms in these cytokines genes may contribute to the risk of PCOS.…”

“…Surprisingly, there is an extremely wide variation in results; between 4.8% and 82% of women with RSA were found to have PCOS on ultrasound [17,18]. PCOS is associated with various metabolic and reproductive dysfunctions [19][20][21]. Elevated numbers of circulating inflammatory mediators in response to noxious stimuli have been observed in PCOS [19,22].…”
