Association ofinterleukin-10gene single nucleotide polymorphisms with rheumatoid arthritis in a Chinese population

Abstract: The rs1800890 variant might contribute to RA susceptibility in the Chinese population. Replication studies in different ethnic groups are required to further examine the critical role of gene variation in the pathogenesis of RA.

“…Several researches have indicated that the incidences of RA in different ethnic groups, geographical areas are different, and the RA prevalence is approximately 1% around the world (3, 4). It has been revealed that genetic susceptibilities, abnormal metabolic enzymes, aberrant immune response are involved in RA development (5, 6). Latterly, a number of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), the majority of which are located in the non-coding intervals, are gradually identified to be associated with the susceptibility of this disease according to genome-wide association studies (7, 8).…”

“…Rheumatoid arthritis is generally known as a chronic, complex autoimmune disease characterized by has complex genetic backgrounds. 19,20 Several studies have shown that pro-inflammatory cytokines play critical roles in the pathogenesis of multiple autoimmune diseases, including RA and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). 21,22 Recent investigations had indicated increased serum resistin level in RA patients when compared to the healthy controls.…”

“…A few IL-10 promoter polymorphic sites have been characterized with determination of three polymorphisms from transcription initiation site at positions -819 (rs1800871), -592 (rs1800872) and -1082 (rs1800896) (-1082) (46). These IL-10 promoter polymorphisms have been the most widely investigated in various diseases: asthma, cardiovascular diseases, diabetic nephropathy, systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic periodontitis, Alzheimer's disease (47)(48)(49)(50)(51)(52)(53). Furthermore, these polymorphisms are strongly associated with various serum levels of IL-10 in vivo (54).…”
