Association of GB virus C (GBV-C)/hepatitis G virus (HGV) with haematological diseases of different malignant potential

Abstract: Among risk groups for GB virus C (GBV-C)/HGV infection, patients with haematological diseases are particularly exposed due to the combination of transfusional support and immunodeficiency status. To examine any association between GBV-C/HGV positivity and different malignancy potential of hematological diseases, we investigated two groups of patients, one with clonal stem cell disease with long latency period (myelodysplasia, myeloproliferative disease) and one with malignant haematological diseases (Hodgkin's… Show more

“…A high incidence of past GBV‐C infection might be present in patients with B cell‐NHLs . Some studies suggested an association between GBV‐C infection and NHL , but other authors could not make the same observation . Many of these studies comprised a small number of patients or lacked of controls, so this still represents a controversial issue.…”

“…Pavlova et al . (Pavlova et al . 1999) investigated two groups of patients, one with clonal stem cell disease with long latency period (myelodysplasia, myeloproliferative disease) and one with malignant haematological diseases (Hodgkin's lymphoma, non‐Hodgkin's lymphoma, acute leukaemia, multiple myeloma).…”

“…The prevalence of GBV‐C/HGV RNA in the group of oncological cases (72%) was significantly higher ( P = 0.02) than in the patients with clonal stem cell diseases (28%). A correlation could not be confirmed between GBV‐C/HGV and liver enzyme levels, blood transfusions, chemotherapy, or viral co‐infection (Pavlova et al . 1999).…”
