Association of Depression With All-Cause and Cardiovascular Disease Mortality Among Adults in China

Abstract: IMPORTANCE Depression is associated with increased disease burden worldwide and with higher risk of mortality in Western populations. OBJECTIVE To investigate whether depression is a risk factor for all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in adults in China.

“…In the Japanese cohort, Yamada and colleagues reported a twofold higher risk of death from ischemic stroke in a young subgroup of participants (aged 40-59) who experienced two or more pregnancy losses than those with no history of pregnancy loss 15. Recurrent spontaneous abortion is a major stressful event in a woman’s life and has been associated with adverse mental health problems, such as depression and anxiety after the loss,42 which are increasingly known as potential risk factors for all cause mortality and mortality related to cardiovascular disease 43. The association between spontaneous abortion and all cause premature mortality was also stronger in women who experienced their first spontaneous abortion early in their reproductive life, suggesting that spontaneous abortion at an older age is more likely an indication of age related changes, such as chromosomal abnormalities and decreased ovarian function,4445 rather than an early sign of underlying physiopathology resulting in a greater risk of premature death.…”

“…5 Data indicated that depressive symptoms are correlated with an increased prevalence of cardiovascular diseases and allcause mortality in Chinese adults. 6 In China, the lifetime prevalence of depression was 6.9%, the prevalence of depression was higher in female, and those individuals with aged 18-34 years had a higher prevalence of depression than adults aged 35-49 years. 1 However, a metaanalysis showed that the incidence rate of depressive symptoms was 23.8% among 32,694 Chinese university students from 1997 to 2015.…”

“…Moreover, even if they were not infected with COVID-19, patients in long-term care settings had to be abruptly isolated, losing contact with families and caregivers. Such a situation may have led to depression and a decline in their psychological and physical health [23]. Solutions targeting these specific issues and ways to improve the community health training of long-term care personnel and administrators should be investigated in the future.…”
