Association of Body Composition with Type 2 Diabetes: A Retrospective Chart Review Study

Abstract: This study analyzed the body composition of individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). In this retrospective chart review study, body composition was measured through multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (InBody 770). Body composition assessments were conducted in individuals with T2DM, who were aged ≥18 years. The parameters included body mass index (BMI), body fat mass (BFM), fat-free mass (FFM), visceral fat area, percent body fat (PBF), appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM), and skeletal muscle … Show more

“…With similar BMI, LM decreased and FM increased more significantly in diabetic patients than in non-diabetic patients [30]. Studies have shown a strong relationship between T2DM and SO [4,31], and body composition measurements are important tools for assessing both diseases [5,6].…”

“…T2DM is closely related to SO, and obesity is a common risk factor for both [4]. Body composition measurements include body weight, BMI, waist circumference, fat mass, percentage body fat, muscle mass, visceral adipose tissue and subcutaneus adipose tissue, which is performed by non-invasive techniques, playing a key role in evaluating T2DM and SO [5,6].…”

“…Body fat, body fat percentage, muscle mass, and skeletal muscle mass were measured by the bioelectrical impedance method using multifrequency BIA (MF-BIA; InBody 770, Cerritos, CA, USA). The height-adjusted skeletal muscle mass index (SMI: skeletal muscle mass index, [kg]/square of height [m 2 ]) was calculated based on the obtained body weight for statistical analyses [ 25 ]. Collected blood and urine samples were centrifuged and measured by each method.…”

“…Engagement metrics are presented in Table 3. The median number of active days per week was 6.8 (IQR 5.8-6.8), while the total active days out of the maximum of 28 days of the program was 27 (IQR [23][24][25][26][27]. Users interacted with missions on average 7.7 times a day, and the number of highly engaged users was 72% (21/29), of whom 57% (12/21) were patients with breast cancer and 43% (9/21) had other types of cancer.…”
