Association between the concentration of fine particles in the atmosphere and acute respiratory diseases in children

Abstract: OBJECTIVE To analyze the association between fine particulate matter concentration in the atmosphere and hospital care by acute respiratory diseases in children.METHODS Ecological study, carried out in the region of Grande Vitória, Espírito Santo, in the winter (June 21 to September 21, 2013) and summer (December 21, 2013 to March 19, 2014). We assessed data of daily count for outpatient care and hospitalization by respiratory diseases (ICD-10) in children from zero to 12 years in three hospitals in the Region… Show more

“…Air pollution is a major threat to human health, potentially leading to chronic cardiovascular and respiratory diseases (Dapper et al, 2016;Gouveia et al, 2017;Nascimento et al, 2017). Moreover, air pollution impairs genetic stability, contributes to mutations in the DNA, and increases the risk of cancer (Lewtas, 1993;Bostr€ om et al, 1994;Cohen et al, 2004;IARC, 2016).…”

“…It is described that in the age group under one year, regardless of gender, the most common causes of health services demand occur within the perinatal period, followed by respiratory diseases caused by pollution of materials in the atmosphere. 4 It is pointed out that the highest weight found was in a female child, while the lowest weight was in a male child. The relationship between birth weight and clinical manifestations is considered, low weight (BP), ie weight below 2,500 grams, and prematurity are considered important risk factors for child health and infant morbidity and mortality in the pre-term and postnatal.…”

“…3 Among the most frequent morbidities in children under one year of age, acute respiratory infections, common colds, tonsillitis, otitis, sinusitis and pneumonia, which may be of viral origin, stand out, which occurs in most cases or bacterial, which makes them one of the main causes of seeking consultations and hospitalizations in this age group. 4 It is evidenced that the deterioration in quality of life, school absenteeism, in addition to the high costs with hospitalizations have a relevant negative impact on public health, and these conditions, linked to environmental factors, such as particulate contamination, are responsible for the prevalence of Acute Infections of the Respiratory Tract (ARF) in the most susceptible and vulnerable infants younger than one year. 5 Developing, with full attention to health and the fight against diseases as the main mission of health professionals, by the Ministry of Health (MH), the Family Health Strategy (FHS) in the national territory as one of the preferred points of insertion and community linkage to health services.…”

“…The high concentration of air pollution is a strong indication of respiratory, cardiovascular and neurological diseases, and of several types of cancer 5 . Long periods of both rain and drought influence these conditions, since drier periods increase exposure to dust, which easily irritates respiratory tract, and rainier days are more conducive to respiratory diseases, thus possibly representing a strong health aggravating factor.…”
