Association between physical activity and walking capacity with cognitive function in peripheral artery disease patients

Abstract: Greater memory performance was associated with greater moderate to vigorous physical activity levels and walking capacity in patients with symptomatic peripheral artery disease. Clinical interventions focused on improving moderate to vigorous physical activity levels and walking capacity may provide important therapies to potentially enhance cognitive health in patients with peripheral artery disease.

“…Habitual physical activity levels were also similar between patients with different leg symptoms, supporting the close relationship reported between functional capacity and physical activity levels. 4 The results indicated that regardless of different leg symptoms, the habitual physical activity profile was similar to that previously reported, 2729 characterized by long periods spent in sedentary behaviors and light physical activities and a few minutes spent in moderate to vigorous physical activities.…”

“…Recently, confirming experimental data, clinical trials have shown the presence of cerebrovascular disease in the context of PAD [26,27,28,29]. Thus, compared to hypertensives and normotensives patients, patients with PAD had significantly lower performance on seven tests of nonverbal memory, concentration, executive function, perception-motor speed, and manual dexterity.…”

“…Among the positive effects of physical exercise are the reduction of inflammatory factors and oxidative stress, increased angiogenesis, and improvement of endothelial and cognitive function. According to Cavalcante et al [29], cognitive performance in patients with PAD is positively associated with walking ability and moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity.…”
