Are cardiovascular function and habitual physical activity levels similar in patients with classic and atypical claudication symptoms? A cross-sectional study

Abstract: Objective To analyze the impact of the different types of exertional leg pain on cardiovascular function, functional capacity, and habitual physical activity levels in patients with peripheral arterial disease. Methods In this cross-sectional study, 124 patients with symptomatic peripheral arterial disease were included. Exertional leg pain was evaluated using the San Diego Claudication Questionnaire. Subsequently, patients were categorized into two groups according to their exertional leg pain: atypical leg p… Show more

“…Systolic and diastolic central BP was obtained by the pulse wave analysis technique, recorded in the radial artery of the arm less affected by PD using applanation tonometry (SphygmoCor; Atcor Medical, Sydney, Australia), following the previously described protocol [23]. Briefly, the validated transfer function algorithm is provided by the SphygmoCor software to estimate central values of systolic and diastolic BP, equivalent to the pressure wave measured by an invasive catheter [24].…”

“…Cardiac autonomic modulation was assessed from the R-R intervals obtained by an HR monitor (V800; Polar Electro, Kempele, Finland) during 10 min with the patient in the supine position following the previously described protocol [23]. Continuous stationary data recorded for at least 5 min were used for analysis.…”

“…However, the effects of ACT on the walking capacity in other conditions (e.g., walking fast, climbing stairs, the six-minute walking test, etc), as well as on the other parameters of functional capacity, such as strength and balance, are still unclear. This is relevant, since these patients also present alterations in different parameters of functional capacity [ 10 , 27 , 29 , 39 ].…”

“…This prospective study included patients with PAD recruited from the research databases of both observational, descriptive cross-sectional studies and measurement instrument validation studies. 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 This study was approved by the Universidade Nove de Julho's Ethics Committee before data collection (CAAE #31529220.8.0000.5511). Participants` responses were only included after their consent had been received, prior to starting the protocol.…”
