Association between human immunodeficiency virus type 1 infection and cancer in the black population of Johannesburg and Soweto, South Africa

Abstract: Summary A case-control study of 913 black cancer patients (aged 15-50 years) was undertaken to measure the association between human immunodeficiency (HIV) infection and cancers believed to have an infective aetiology. Controls were patients with cancers believed not to be infective in origin. The prevalence of HIV in the controls of 7.3% (24 of 325) was similar to the background HIV seropositivity in this population. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (Cl) adjusted for age, year of diagnosis, mari… Show more

“…2 However, since the review by IARC (and a previous study in Johannesburg 29 showing a nonsignificant risk of cervical cancer in HIV positive individuals), relative risks of developing cervical cancer in developing countries have ranged consistently between 1.2 and 2, compared to 5-10 in western countries. 4,30 In studies from Africa, stronger associations have been observed between HIV-1 and preinvasive cervical lesions than with invasive cervical cancer, 31 the lower risks observed in association with cervical cancer in Africa assumed to be due to AIDS-related competing comorbidities.…”

“…10,11 The incidence of Kaposi's sarcoma is increasing rapidly in South Africa. 12 In the United States and most of Europe Kaposi's sarcoma, which was rare before the advent of AIDS, now occurs mainly among homosexual men with AIDS. 8 Little is known about the transmission of HHV-8, its association with other cancers, or its interaction with the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1).…”
