Associação entre doença periodontal e aterosclerose subclínica: uma revisão sistemática

Abstract: The association between periodontal disease and the development of atherosclerosis has been studied. The systematic review of literature aims to evaluate the association between periodontal disease and subclinical atherosclerosis. A literature search of the PubMed, Scopus, LILACS, BBO, Cochrane Library and Scielo bibliographic databases was conducted using the following descriptors: "periodontal disease", "periodontitis", "carotid", and "therosclerosis". Articles were excluded if they: presented abstracts writ… Show more

“…Most disease correlations were found for periodontitis with T2DM (n = 46) (1921,24,26,29,30,38,40) and periodontitis with CVD (n = 33) (23,27,28,31,34,36,37,39,4144,47,48). This was followed by SRs indicating correlations of tooth loss with CVD (n = 6) (28), periodontitis with cerebrovascular disease (n = 4) (25,28,32,35), and dental caries with T2DM (n = 4) (26).…”

“…The included SRs varied in diverse aspects. Multiple primary studies, including randomized controlled trials (RCTs) (14,15), case-control studies (CCSs) (22,23), cross-sectional studies (22,23), cohort studies (22), clinical trials (25), observational studies (32), mixed-method studies (32), pilot studies (41), and population surveys (41) were examined. The primary studies differed by study population, from 303 participants in an RCT (37) to 1,025,340 subjects in a CCS (39).…”

“…[6][7][8] The inflammation process of PD may trigger systemic inflammation that could be involved in the progression of atherosclerosis and consequently in CVD outcomes such as myocardial infarction or stroke. 9 However, it is not totally clear what the causal pathway between PD and CVD risk is.…”

“…Indeed, there is a bidirectional relationship between psoriasis and periodontitis, where systemic inflammation produced by psoriasis may increase the severity of periodontitis, and this focus of infection acts as a triggering factor for psoriasis 49. Furthermore, periodontal disease causes vascular endothelial infection, local increase of white cells, tissue growth factors and endotoxins, favoring atherosclerosis and erectile dysfunction 50…”
