Assessment of Salivary Cortisol Concentrations as a Level of Stress Indicator among Individuals Undergoing Dental Extraction Procedure

Abstract: Background: Anxious patients tend to exaggerate the aversive events before the actual dental therapy. The anxiety and fear are the major factors that regulate cortisol levels. Aim: Our study aims to estimate the salivary cortisol among patients subjected to dental extraction and correlate any existence between pre- and post-extraction cortisol levels and vital parameters compared to the control group. Methodology: The study sample included si… Show more

“…Most patients who experienced it consider it one of the worst experiences in their life [4,[18][19][20][21][22]. Recent research indicates that patients with pronounced anxiety tend to categorize oral surgical interventions as extremely unpleasant even though they have not had or experienced such an experience, and show a tendency to overestimate the intensity of postoperative pain [23,24]. Anxiety before the application of local anesthesia and tooth extraction confirms a wide range of physical and psychological complications, and can stimulate the adrenal cortex to increase serum cortisol levels.…”

“…The DFA appearance before application of local anesthesia and tooth extraction was confirmed by a wide range of physical and psychological events and could stimulate the adrenal cortex to increase the level of cortisol in the serum. Some authors pointed to a significant increase in cortisol in saliva before tooth extraction, which indicated the patient's psychological burden 23,24 . In addition to the influence of DFA on the level of pain, we determined in our research its influence on vital parameters, primarily the cardiovascular response of the body and breathing rhythm.…”
