Assessment of Motives and Orientations

Abstract: Study aims to test for the hypothesized dimensional structure of a revision and extension of the Orientation and Motivation Inventory (OMI) and to check for sex differences. The 12-scale inventory was administered to 307 high school and college men, and to 184 college women. The intercorrelations among the half scale scores for the men and for the women were separately factor analyzed and rotated. For men, 10 of the factors, and for women, 11 of the factors hypothesized were confirmed. Five second-order dimens… Show more

“…When Youniss, Lorr, and Stefic (1979), for example, factor-analyzed the items of their Orientation and Motivation Inventory,^ they encountered five second-order factors, four of which correspond closely to factors and clusters in our study. Their Status-seeking factor seems very similar to our Competitive Ambition, their Seeking and Helping People to our Interpersonal Concem, their Theoretical Interest to our Intellectual Orientation, and their New Experience to our Exploration-play.…”

“…The instrument measures 12 bipolar motivational dimensions. Information regarding the development of the OMI has been reported by , Youniss, Lorr, and Stefic (1979) and Lorr and Brazz (1979). Twelve dimensions were confirmed using a factor analysis, and the reliability of the instrument was found to be adequate in terms of internal consistency and test -retest stability.…”

“…Altruism was measured using an abridged subscale from the Orientation and Motivation Inventory, or OMI (Youniss et al, 1979). The OMI was designed to assess "preferred ways people have of thinking about and responding to the world around them" (p. 555).…”
