A social skills inventory of 128 true-false items was constructed to assess eight hypothesized bipolar dimensions. In a series of principal component analyses, seven of the constructs plus an added concept were isolated in both college and high school men and women. Some of the factors isolated were Social Assertiveness, Directiveness, Defense of Rights, Confidence, and Empathy. Two higher order factors-Social Skill and Empathy-were also identified in several samples. Validity studies revealed strong commonalities with Riggio's (1986) Social Skills Inventory, the Horowitz Inventory of Interpersonal Problems, the Watson and Friend (1969) Social Avoidance and Distress Scale, and a set of self-ratings. These findings suggest that the Social Relations Survey (SRS) is a useful device for clinical and research application to problems involving social skills.
This study investigated distinguishing personal characteristics that might differentiate special subgroups within the profession of psychology. The approach was to look at motivational dimensions as measured by a self-report questionnaire, the Orientation and Motivation Inventory {OMI).Three groups of psychologists-clinical practitioner, academic clinical, and academic nonclinical-were contrasted on 72 OMI dimensions via a discriminant function analysis. Significant motivational differences were found between practitioners and the two academic groups combined. The academic psychologists are more theoretical and achievement oriented, whereas the practitioners are more altruistic, personoriented, and materialistic.
The predictive validities of several psychometric tests as well as trait ratings by teams of psychologists and psychiatrists •re examined with respect to criteria of adjustment to the Antarctic during the wintering-over period of 1957. Thirtythree subjective symptoms reported monthly together with three other attitudinal criteria were intercorrelated and factor analyzed. The total N was 109. Using factor scorý.; computed for each of the five factors extracted from this matrix as adjustment eriteri,' it was found that men with the following characteristics had the greatest adjustment potential for the Antarctic conditions: Iligh intelligence test score. , low interest in organized sports, rated high with respect to "'ability to communicate", low with respect to "overt hostility", high with rspect to "'ability to cope with aggression"", to have less than a college education, to be single and over 25 years of age, and to have come from the southern section of the U. S. The methodological importance of the applicttion of factor analytic techniques to repetitively collected subjective data is emphasized.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
