It was reported that Rubian (tiger shrimp) Penaeus semislcatus, which is consumed as a regular part of the diet in the Arabian Gulf, could be beneficial due to its high content of phosphorus, zinc, calcium, copper, magnesium, and protein (Musaiger & D'Souza, 2008). The quality of fish and fish products is multifaceted and includes a wide range of issues, such as safety and freeness from health risks, nutritional value or quality, convenience, availability, and integrity, as well as the freshness of fish, sensory characteristics, physical features, type, and quantity of products. Furthermore, fishing, storage, handling, processing, and procedures, in addition to conditions such as time and temperature that affect the fish products' safety and quality are significant factors (Abbas et al., 2008). A lack of information about the enhanced fish management and postharvest processes contributes to low-quality fish products and fisheries (Food and Agriculture Organization, 2020). In order to be confident about health and safety, it is essential to maintain high levels of fish quality throughout the whole food chain, from catching to consumption (Hyldig & Green-Petersen, 2005), Consumers' requests for excellent, healthy, and safe foods is growing globally (Sen, 2005). Fish meat and seafood products are moderately unsteady in fresh and frozen preservation. The organoleptic characteristics of fish occur quickly due to multiple factors. Biochemical (i.e., enzymatic) changes and microbial effects yield quantifiable alterations in fish during fresh (iced) storage, while frozen preservation induces physical, chemical, and biochemical reactions that reduce fish quality (Woyewoda et al., 1986). Isolation and Identification of Salmonella spp. from Broiler Chicken Meat in Sri Lanka and their Antibiotic Resistance

Purpose : Salmonella infections continue to be a global problem with millions of humans and animal cases occurring annually. Broiler chicken plays a significant role causing Salmonella infections in Sri Lanka. Consumption of food contaminated with antimicrobial resistant Salmonella aggravates the problem. This study isolated, identified, and serotype the Salmonella spp. from broiler chicken meat in Sri Lanka and examined their antimicrobial susceptibility to be used in establishment of control measures. Research Method : Isolation of Salmonella species from broiler chicken meat was done by conventional method of isolation followed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) confirmation. All PCR confirmed isolates of Salmonella were serotype and then, isolates were tested for antibiotic susceptibility using disc diffusion assay followed by the detection of antibiotic resistance genes using PCR. Findings : Broiler chicken meat in Sri Lanka is contaminated with Salmonella spp. at the prevalence of 11.6% and 8.9% of them carried hns and invA specific genes. Isolates were serotyped as Salmonella Typhimurium (47.8%), Salmonella Enteritidis (26.1%) and non typable (26.1%). Three isolates were resistant to ampicillin. Intermediate resistance was shown to three antibiotics and all the isolates were sensitive to nine antibiotics. Majority (56.5%) of Salmonella were sensitive to all the tested antibiotics. Prevalence of resistant genes for tetracycline, sulfonamides and aminoglycosides were within 4%-26%. None of the isolates except one (4%) carried chloramphenicol resistance genes. Originality / Value : Steps must be taken to minimize contamination of broiler chicken meat with Salmonella spp in Sri Lanka. Although, there is a low prevalence of antibiotic resistant isolates, its mere presence in broiler chicken is a warning signal of possibility of emergence of multidrug resistant strains.

This study was carried out to determine the domestic level marketing channels, marketing cost, and marketing margin for four commercially important marine fish species in Negombo fishery harbour, Western Province, Sri Lanka, with a focus on marketing efficiency. Data related to fish catch and prices were collected by direct observation during the period of January to December 2018. About 80 to 105 tons of fish catch per day were being landed. The annual average wholesale prices of fish (kg -1 )g varied from LKR 450 to 670 for Yellowfin tuna, LKR 233 to 414 for Skipjack tuna, LKR 320 to 385 for Frigate tuna, and LKR 140 to 190 for Indian scad, which is typical market behaviour. Though the net profit per 100 kg of fish received by the wholesaler was higher than the assembler, the retailer has made a significant amount of profit, nearly six times higher than the assembler. Ten marketing channels were identified from fish producers to the ultimate consumer and some channels involved more than three intermediaries. As typical for long marketing channels, high prices were paid by the consumer for the low freshness quality of fish. Though, the retail price of skipjack tuna at the Negombo landing center is moderately correlated (r=0.634), the other three fish species did not give a clear indication. Thus, the price factor of selected marine fish at the landing site was not having a significant impact on the market integration. Consumers were concerned about both price and quality when purchasing the fish. To improve the marketing efficiency of the marine fish market, it is recommended to implement shortening of the fish market channel with less involvement of intermediaries and to develop the fish market facilities appropriately.
