Assessment of Incubation Period of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis due to Leishmania major in Tunisia

Abstract: The period between the infective sandfly bites and appearance of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) lesions is still hypothetical and little studied. This work aimed at assessing the incubation time of zoonotic CL (ZCL) due to Leishmania major using a standardized methodology. The retrospective analysis used the epidemiological, clinical, and biological information available in the database recording all the CL cases diagnosed at the Parasitology Department of the Pasteur Institute of Tunis during 2015-2019. It allo… Show more

“…Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is the most common form of leishmaniasis, transmitted to humans by biting a female sandfly. One of the causes of this disease is the intracellular parasite Leishmania major (11,12). Cutaneous leishmaniasis causes ugly ulcers that remain in place for a long time.…”

“…A surge in adrenocorticotropic hormone and cortisol due to excessive cytokine release imparts skin hyperpigmentation in VL individuals, which in the Indian native language, is termed as “Kalazar-a black fever” [ 20 ]. The incubation duration of the leishmanial parasite ranges from 7 to 147 days [ 21 ]. Hence, the commencement of VL is either acute or insidious.…”

“…Still regarding the Amazon basin area, Oré and colleagues estimated a median IP of 56 days with a minimum and maximum of 14 days and 252 days, respectively [ 12 ]. To the best of our knowledge, the only study specifically designed to determine IP among many individuals was performed in Tunisia between 2015 and 2019 [ 13 ]. In this study, Aoun et al .…”

“…In this study, Aoun et al . determined IP in patients dwelling in areas that were non-endemic for Leishmania major Zoonotic CL (ZCL) and were infected during trips to local foci of ZCL [ 13 ]. A median IP of 35 days was found, with values ranging from 7 to 147 days.…”
